AWW Program Staffers Mona and Sydney, along with former AWW Director Dr. Bill Deutsch, had a great few days learning and exploring at the 2024 Environmental Education Association of Alabama Conference at Camp McDowell in Nauvoo, AL in mid-February.
The EEAA Conference is always a wonderful opportunity to get to know other environmental educators from all parts of Alabama. Educators who attend are classroom teachers, environmental center instructors, seasonal staff, Extension staff, volunteer organizations, and more.
The conference kicked off with field trips around Camp McDowell and nearby natural wonders. Trips included hikes, fossil hunting, and nature-inspired art projects led by McDowell Environmental Staff and local experts.
Mona and Sydney explored the Clear Creek Canyon at McDowell on a hike led by Camp McDowell Staff who were very knowledgeable about the unique natural wonders around camp. We hiked down the canyon to the beautiful waterfalls and had the chance to check out some creek critters like stoneflies!
Dr. Deutsch ventured to the 315 million year old Minkin Fossil Site. He found several sets of fossilized tracks, including the ones pictured here!
Keynote Kyle Lybarger from the Native Habitat Project shared his story of being a forester to advocating for, and actively planting native plants in yards across the southeast.
Staff attended several sessions covering topics including the BEETLES approach to hands-on education, how the AL Course of Study is created, and how educators can engage through virtual content by Alabama Public TV and PBS.
Any Alabama educator interested in environmental education is welcome to join EEAA and attend the conference. Check out more details about the organization on the EEAA website, www.eeaa.us or follow them on Facebook.
