AWW @ World Affairs Youth Seminar (WAYS)

By Emily Brown

AWW Staff were invited to do a water resources demonstration for the attendees at Auburn University’s World Affairs Youth Seminar (WAYS). The Seminar is an opportunity for 10th-12th grade high school students to “examine global issues in a ‘real world’ context.”

AWW Director Mona Dominguez, Data Coordinator Sergio RuizCordova, and ACES Summer Intern Emily Brown presented on the AWW Program, how the program applies to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and how students can have a positive impact on the environment starting today.

Mona started the demonstration by describing what a citizen scientist is and what AWW looks for in its data. Then Mona and Sergio led an activity that illustrated how much water the average individual American uses or consumes in one day compared to other individuals in other countries.

They then went on to talk about pollution, where it comes from, and how much of an impact it can have on water quality and access. This portion ended with the campers completing an activity where they came up with water-related solutions in other countries.

The presentation ended with Sergio talking about his work with Global Water Watch, and Mona talking about her time in the Peace Corps.

We want to thank Dr. Jesús Tirado the head of the Seminar, for inviting us to come and do a presentation for the students!
