Alabama officially became the US’s 22nd state on December 14, 1819. This year marks the culmination of a three year celebration called “Alabama 200” led by the Alabama Bicentennial Commission to recognize the people, places, and events that form our rich history. Dr. Bill Deutsch’s recently released book, Alabama Rivers: A Celebration & Challenge, that highlights the human history and natural wonders that have defined Alabama is endorsed by Alabama 200.
On Oct. 16, AWW Staffers Mona and Sydney had the pleasure of touring the Dog River Watershed with the best tour guides anyone could ask for – Debi Foster, Executive Director of Dog River Clearwater Revival (DRCR), Dr. Mimi Fearn, long time AWW monitor and trainer and member of DRCR, and Eric Holladay, a dedicated AWW monitor and member of DRCR.
LaMotte has recently made a change in the size and packaging of the BCG-MR Indicator Tablets (order code T-2311-J).
Both bottle and tablets are now larger (see images below); however, the tablet formula and the procedure for the Total Alkalinity Test remain the same.
Dana Herren is passionate about water resources, geology, and teaching kids through hands-on activities. She is a dedicated AWW Volunteer Trainer and Monitor, and an active member of the Logan Martin Lake Protection Association. Let’s get to know Dana a little more!
Rachel began her work with Alabama Water Watch and the AU Water Resources Center in May 2018, and officially became a full-time Research Associate with us in October 2018. Rachel conducts training workshops, develops new training and educational materials, works on research and grants, and has been instrumental in creating marketing and promotional materials for AWW! She is an AWWesome addition to the AWW Program Staff as she is extremely hard working, intuitive, creative, and a blast to have around the office!

Zoe Nye is a junior at Ardmore High School in Limestone County. Through her participation with the Naturalist Studies Program at AHS, she became one of the first students certified as a 4-H AWW Water Monitor. In the three years that have followed, she has conducted regular monitoring under the supervision of her teacher, Staff Weems de Graffenried and 4-H Agent Chloe Wilson.

On July 26, 2018, 4-H AL Water Watch history was made as Madison Younge won first place for her project, “Blackwater: Is It Normal”, in the Natural Resources Category of the Freestyle Showcase during the 4-H State Competitive Events Day at the Alabama 4-H Center in Columbiana, AL.

On September 21st, AWW Staff – Mona Dominguez and Sydney Smith returned to Ardmore School to conduct the third annual 4-H AWW Water Chemistry training for student members of the Naturalist Studies class led by teacher Starr Weems de Graffenried and supported by 4-H Regional Extension Agent for Limestone County, Chloe Wilson. As always, AWW had a blast with the students who were conducting the chemistry practices like experts by the end of the day. Read more and see photos from the day here!
